I wonder if you could say something about the incidence of mental illness (and I don't mean "craziness") that you have observed working with ex-cult members. The reason I ask is it seems that many exers avoid treatment for illness that could have been caused by the cult and/or been something the person already had a predisposition for.
I ask because one thing Berg did was make anyone going for help to psychologists or psychiatrists or anyone in the mental health field, as "weak" or "demon possessed" or a "failure" and just generally it was the worst possible thing that could happen to a person, to get help for even clinical depression or post partum depression.
Another thing is that many people that joined in the early days were drug users and often times that is people who are self medicating.
I wonder if you could write a bit about resistance to getting help and about how it is a strength to do so.
What do you think some qualities a good therapist or Doctor for a cult survivor would be? What might be things to avoid? And please please say a bit about people not avoiding getting help because of those past messages that shame them. TY
