I havne't tried Mesquite yet, but I just found out that a friend of ours has some, so I'm sure that will be part of the plan coming up.
I wanted to do pecan, because of the Texas thing, and right now I have a bunch of it. A "rick" according to David C.
I would like to try other things. We have a lot of very mature orange trees around here. I've heard that most fruit wood is good, but I don't know that I've ever heard of anybody trying it with orange wood.
When Sam Ajemian and Aza were here they made a BBQ lunch for everyone. Aza was on my case big time about not using charcoal. "VOOD!, all I vant is VOOD!". She kept pointing to my huge supply of eucalyptus fire wood (our property is lined with giant eucalyptus trees that drop branches constantly). I was afraid to let her use it, because I thought it would make the meat taste like cough drops. But, who knows?
The last two weekends I've grilled things using the pecan wood in my webber kettle. It has turned out really well. Considering that I let it burn down into coals before putting the meat on and there is no actual smoking going on, I almost wonder if the Eucalyptus would work. I don't know if I'm willing to ruin a dinner trying, but Aza was game for using it that day.
