Those stories make my canoing mishap look like child's play. A girlfriend, our sons, and I were nearly drowned when we were swept under a river barrier. I don't know what they are actually called, but the current was so strong that it flipped the canoe and although we were wearing vests we were swept under the cement barrier. Later, realizing what had happened, we thanked God that there were no branches or debris to snag our vests and prevent us from surfacing. That incident was one reason that I decided to sell my canoe. It was a nice one but I needed a better canoing partner. I'd seriously like to get a kayak but keep it and me out of dangerous currents.
