In Response To: Dear Programmer Dave (Family pubs spy needs help!)

from a friend of mine that was trying to help me install Home ARC in XP. He couldn't do it either but it may give you some ideas on what else you can try As they say: "I haven't failed, I've found 10,000 ways that don't work. Keep trying. and let me know how you did it.-Thanks

Andy,

Here are the notes of when I tried getting the HARC98PRG CD going under WinXP...

Richard

********************************
* Tried installing the HomeArc 98 CD:

- Previously had copied the entire CD to D:\HARC98PRG.

- Set the Compatibility mode of almost every executable (before doing the installation)

by performing the following:

* Expand the HARC98PRG directory tree with Shift-

or Fn-0 (i.e., Fn-) on my notebook.

* For each of the executables in the following list, set Compatibility Mode to the item in brackets:

- \...\_DEMOS\01_INTRO.EXE [Windows 98 / Windows Me]

- \...\_DEMOS\02_VIEW1.EXE [Windows 98 / Windows Me]

- \...\_DEMOS\03_VIEW2.EXE [Windows 98 / Windows Me]

- \...\_DEMOS\04_SRCH1.EXE [Windows 98 / Windows Me]

- \...\_DEMOS\05_SRCH2.EXE [Windows 98 / Windows Me]

- \...\HOMEARC\SETUP.EXE [Windows 98 / Windows Me]

- \...\WIN3\ACROBT3\AR16E301.EXE [Windows 95]

- \...\WIN3\HARCFLOP.DSK\DISK1\SETUP.EXE [Windows 95]

- \...\WIN95\ACROBT95\AR32E301.EXE [Windows 95]

- \...\WIN95\CPY96\DISK1\SETUP.EXE [Windows 98 / Windows Me]

- \...\WIN95\CPY96\DISK1\UNINST.EXE [Windows 98 / Windows Me]

- \...\WIN95\MENUEXT\DISK1\SETUP.EXE [Windows 98 / Windows Me]

- \...\WIN95\MENUEXT\DISK1\UNINST.EXE [Windows 98 / Windows Me]

perform the following actions:

- Right-click the .EXE file.

- Select Properties / Compatibility.

- Click: Run this program in compatibility mode for:

- Select: Windows 95 *or* Windows 98 / Windows Me, as listed above.

* For each of the DOS-like files in the following list:

- \...\WIN95\UTIL\MEMCTRL.COM

perform the following actions:

- Right-click the file.

- Select Properties, then change the following settings:

* Program / Advanced / Windows PIF Settings / Autoexec filename

to ??.

* ??

I tried several changes here, but don't remember what they were.

- Open \HARC98PRG\SETUP.HLP and tried to perform the Setup as described

in the Help file.

* But discovered that the Setup would not complete from this directory,

so eliminated the D:\HARC98PRG folder and moved all its files up one level to

the root of the D: drive.

* Then tried running SETUP.EXE again. It worked.

* Rebooted.

* Tried running HOMEARC but MEMCTRL.COM was not found or was old version.

* Tried running a (WinXP) CMD prompt then running MEMCTRL.COM /I.

This worked, but then running HOMEARC from either the command line

or from Windows Explorer would never use MEMCTRL.COM due to the same error as above.

* Tried running the old MS-DOS prompt (COMMAND.COM), but got the same results.

- Researched on the Internet for things like:

* MEMCTRL XP

* MEMCTRL WinXP

* MEMCTRL /I

etc., but didn't find any really useful info.

- Gave up. Decided that either:

a) the HomeARC 98 stuff will have to be reprogrammed for WinXP so that MEMCTRL.COM will work

or not even be required, or

b) some sort of "wrapper" for MEMCTRL will have to be used under WinXP.

This is obviously beyond my limited "user of Windows" experience.

It appears to require some Windows guru or Windows programmer experience.

- Restored the partition as before.
