dvd burner

My computer (Dell--purchased less than a year ago) is supposed to burn DVDs,
and according to the instruction manual I can use DVD-r, DVD-rw and I believe
DVD-ram. But whenever I prepare something for burning, put the blank DVD into
the slot, it keeps telling me it doesn't recognize the media. I've tried both
DVD for data and DVD for video, DVDr and DVDrw. Anyone had experience with it?
I've also converted the file into DVD format.
