Requiring people to sing "acapella" for auditions is asking for trouble.
Finding the initial pitch is very important even for good singers.
Very few people have "perfect pitch" memory that allows them to start on the right note automatically.
Most need some sort of reference, even if it's just a pitch pipe or one note from a harmonica.
I think backing tracks at a low volume would be a good idea.
My guess is that they disallow them because they count on making some of the contestants look and sound ridiculous.
It makes the show more "interesting".
