Live Free Or Die Hard

If you are looking for a seamless plot, good
acting and a thoughtful script then you are in trouble, but if all you want is a
hoot of a movie and a good time sitting in the dark then the new Bruce Willis
movie will satisfy what ails you.

This past Saturday morning, at 10:30 AM, I
plunked down my $7.00 matinee admission to see John McClain once more save the
world. If you have already seen the previous movies in the "Die Hard" franchise
then let me give you a bit of good news. THIS one is probably the best since the
initial film in 1988. Although the plot has so many hole that you may think it
was caught in the crossfire of one of the many shootouts, the actors all played
it for a good time, NOT for Oscar consideration.

Willis' McClain is the same hang dog
character, still single, still estranged from his daughter, and still working
the same job in work-a-day fashion. The wisecracks and one liners still zing
around though, even IF John seems a little more tired and care worn. And he
SHOULD, because he is over 50 with no future in front of him.

The surprise is the supporting cast, beginning
with Justin Long. What? who is HE? Well, have you seen those PC vs. MAC computer commercials? Justin is the MAC nerd! And surprise, surprise! he plays a computer nerd! I had never considered him as an actor but he does a great job playing the post
modern, nihilistic, conspiracy schooled, socially disconnected character that
John McClain is tasked to deliver to the proper authorities because he is a
suspected hacker. He plays the perfect foil to McClain's "just get it done"
attitude. Of course in the end the old dog does teach the young guy a few
new tricks, including rising above his own interests to serve a higher good.

Timothy Oliphant
, a Ryan Seacrest lookalike, is the bad guy, and such a
nerdy, wimpy bad guy you never have seen! You can never imagine this guy getting
physical at ANY time, and when McClain threatens to personally deal with him you
can see his face crumble. It's hilarious.

The stunts in this film are WAAAAAY over the top, but who the
heck takes these films seriously anyhow? I found myself laughing out loud at the
implausible stunts, but they were also waaaay entertaining. And if this type of
movie ain't entertaining then why go see it in the first place?

As I said in the beginning, if only mature, thoughtful movies
are your thing then stay away. But if you want to escape for a couple of hours
then go see Live Free Or Die Hard.
