Treadwell befriended, communed, and worked directly with the wild bears of the Katmai National Park in Alaska. The film shows him touching the bears on the nose.

Park rangers killed the bear that attacked him. (Body parts were actually removed from the stomach.) The movie reports it was an older bear from outside the area. The film shows footage of a cranky, hungry bear that Treadwell recorded a day or two before the attack and asks whether this could be the one that killed him. The movie doesn't show every detail, but there was also a second, younger bear involved in the attack, and that bear was killed too. The killer bears apparenatly were strangers to Treadwell.

There's been several books and magazine articles, as well as television coverage of this story.
