The "Walking the Bible" guy has done several programs on PBS. It looks really interesting.

Which Italian travel book are you reading? I've read books by Frances Mayes -- "Under the Tuscan Sun" (which bears NO RESEMBLANCE to the movie) and "Bella Tuscany"; a book by Ferenc Maté, who moved to "The Hills of Tuscany" as a way to re-invigorate his writing career; a terrifically fun book called "Extra Virgin" about 2 sisters who accept a summer job in Italy and wind up buying a rustic house upland from the Riviera; they still live there now, some 20 years later!

Then, fairly recently, I've started reading about southern Italy (where I've never lived). Back in the '30's, a communist doctor named Carlo Levi was exiled to a desolate place called Aliano. He wrote a classic book on the experience, called "Christ Stopped at Eboli" (Eboli is north of Aliano, so the title means that Christ never made it that far south, so that that part of the country is given over to all kinds of strange, pagan folklore). National Geographic travel writer David Yeadon recently retraced Levi's journey, staying in Aliano for a year, and writes about it in an excellent book called "Seasons in Basilicata".

A lover of Italy will find all kinds of treats iin any of these books!
