Silent Spring was written by Rachel Carson, and is considered sort of the beginning of the environmental movement. She was a (biologist maybe) who uncovered the dangerts of (DDT is it--the pesticide) and did a lot of research into the effect of pesticides and insecticides on the environment after WW1 or 2 when the chemicals they were manufacturing for the war were found to be good for killing unwanted bugs and stuff in crops. It's very poetically written, but still taking me a while to get through it.

Rachel Carson died of cancer due to her research and exposing herself to the many harmful manufactured chemicals being used the world at large.
