In Response To: Why do we read what we read? (Oscar The Grouch)

I find that reading captivates my senses the most completely. Movies/TV don't, I still have to do something with my hands, which is why I do a lot of cross-stitch, mostly during watching times. Music and radio is the same, I can't just sit and listen, I must be doing something else. I can't even concentrate if my hands aren't occupied. Even being on the computer, I usually have a few things going. But reading totally absorbs me, I can sit and JUST read.

I love fiction because I don't really have to think, I can read it without trying to digest information, just enjoy.

Non-fiction often requires a lot of thinking, esp. educational books, you have to process the information in order to remember it, and you're reading it to learn something, so it takes me longer cause I read and re-read and take notes, so I tend to do read those types of books when I can sit down somewhere convenient for true concentration.

I don't read inspirational books, I've tried, but they just don't sit well with me. There is one I read though that particularly moved me, The Alchemist by Paul Cohelo, and excellent book, not preachy, and short enough to be read in a couple hours.

I've read a few biographies, 2 I read without stopping almost were Angela's Ashes and A Boy Called It.

Anyway, either it's my nature, or that my Mom gave me penguin classics as a child and I could escape from MLs at age 6 and read Robin Hood and King Arthur, but whatever it is, I love excellent fiction and classics.

My all-time most favorite modern classic is To Kill a Mockingbird. I read it after we left the cult and wondered "Where has classic literature been hiding all my life!?"
