Because it's not about the "end of the world"

"Kosmos" is world. The word used here is "AION" -- AGE. The disciples lived in the AGE of the Law and the Prophets, and everyone knew that what was to follow would be the AGE of Messiah. It was shocking, though, for them to hear that the Temple would not still be part of that new age. Construction on it was only just being finished!

Everything that was believed in their day about Messiah involved some sort of military action, and they still clung to that idea. Whatever was going to happen, it was going to be "earth-shaking". They wanted to know what the signal was going to be for events that they now knew would take place in their lifetime. They had come to Jerusalem for some kind of confrontation that would lead to Jesus' installation as King. But they couldn't yet grasp what it was all about, though Jesus had gone over this with them many times on the journey there.
