Daniel:

I feel the need to repost something I just posted alsewhere.

Here goes:
http://www.newdaynews.com/openhouse/index.cgi/read/20976

Your point is very well taken, Daniel. It made me remember that the passage about the Bereans, as well as the account about the eunuch reading in Isaiah 53.

Jesus openly quoted the OT, and called it (singularly) "Scripture", or "the Law" or "Moses", or "Moses and the prophets" (sounds pretty authoritative) to me!):

Joh 6:44 No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up, at the last day. 45 It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.

And, in Luke 16, Jesus pointed to the fact that people who COULD HAVE believed in Him would have done so, based on the faith that would have resulted from reading the OT, if they hadn't hardened their hearts:

Luke 16:22 And it came to pass that the beggar died and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom. And the rich man also died: and he was buried in hell. 23 And lifting up his eyes when he was in torments, he saw Abraham afar off and Lazarus in his bosom: 24 And he cried and said: Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water to cool my tongue: for I am tormented in this flame. 25 And Abraham said to him: Son, remember that thou didst receive good things in thy lifetime, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted and thou art tormented. 26 And besides all this, between us and you, there is fixed a great chaos: so that they who would pass from hence to you cannot, nor from thence come hither.
27 And he said: Then, father, I beseech thee that thou wouldst send him to my father's house, for I have five brethren, 28 That he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torments. 29 And Abraham said to him: They have Moses and the prophets. Let them hear them. 30 But he said: No, father Abraham: but if one went to them from the dead, they will do penance. 31 And he said to him: If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they believe, if one rise again from the dead.

A real clincher, here, though, if one feels they must limit all actual "true revelation" to ONLY the Gospels, is that Jesus, IN ONE OF THE GOSPELS, says that the specific purpose of the OT is to testify of Him (you CANNOT read this passage ANY OTHER, WAY!):

John 5:39

(ALT) "You* search the Scriptures, because you* think in them to be having eternal life, and these they are which testify concerning Me.

(ASV) Ye search the scriptures, because ye think that in them ye have eternal life; and these are they which bear witness of me;

(BBE) You make search in the holy Writings, in the belief that through them you get eternal life; and it is those Writings which give witness about me.

(CEV) You search the Scriptures, because you think you will find eternal life in them. The Scriptures tell about me,

(Darby) Ye search the scriptures, for ye think that in them ye have life eternal, and they it is which bear witness concerning me;

(DRB) Search the scriptures: for you think in them to have life everlasting. And the same are they that give testimony of me.

(EMTV) You search the Scriptures, because you think that in them you have eternal life; and these are they which testify about Me.

(ESV) You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me,

(GNB) You study the Scriptures, because you think that in them you will find eternal life. And these very Scriptures speak about me!

(GW) You study the Scriptures in detail because you think you have the source of eternal life in them. These Scriptures testify on my behalf.

(HNV) "You search the Scriptures, because you think that in them you have eternal life; and these are they which testify about me.

(KJV+) Search2045 the3588 Scriptures;1124 for3754 in1722 them846 ye5210 think1380 ye have2192 eternal166 life:2222 and2532 they1565 are1526 they which testify3140 of4012 me.1700

Question: Why would He refer them to a dubious source for truth? And, why didn't he categorically, at this point, teach them that the Scriptures He just refered to mere "myths" and/or "fables"?

Finally, on the road to Emmaus, here's what Jesus, in his Own words, told His disciples, AFTER the resurection:

Luke 24:27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded to them in ALL THE SCRIPTURES the things that were concerning him.

That kind of stands out, don't you think?

Sincerely,
OT2 (OldtimerToo)
