Who says that the disciples lived in the Age of the Law and the Prophets. My Bible doesn't mention any such age.
The disciples lived in the Age of Christ's first coming. The very presence of the the bridegroom. The dawn of the New Covenant. The word made flesh and dwelling among us. They were able to behold His glory.
I have a hard time thinking of that period as being dominated by the "law and the prophets".
Jesus was the fulfillment of law and the prophets. And he was fully in control.
And His disciples knew who He was and what he represented. He was "The Christ, the Son of the Living God."
And their question about the time of His second coming illustrates that knowledge. They knew He would leave and then return to judge the world.
So I really don't think their question was about simply moving from one undefined "age" of church history to another.
They were asking about the end of time. And Jesus told them about the end of time.
