In Response To: You're a little mixed up (lydia)

The original issue of this discussion, lest we forget it, was:

Whether or not God really did order His people to commit massacres of entire populations as a judgement for the sins of individuals.

A few posts ago you said that He did:

... God commanded these wars for the specific purpose of punishment and judgment, that the time had come for God to punish specific peoples for all of their atrocious acts and abominations...

But now you seem to be are saying that at the individual level such acts are not of God.

As an indiviual in Christ we know we
forgive, there is no question, Jesus rebuked
his disiciples for wanting to call fire from
the sky on their enemies....

So we see that as an indiviual we forgive,
that Jesus came to save, even at the
inconvience of ourselves.

First of all, Since the sins you mentioned were mostly sexual sins, and did not involve "us" in any way, how would it be possible for us to "forgive". We have not been sinned against. You were saying that God sent His people to massacre men women and children as a punishment for their sins against Him. In such a case, "our" forgiveness cannot enter into the equation.

Any forgiveness would have to come from God himself.

You yourself declared that God did indeed send His people to accomplish such massacres as a punishment for sexual sins.

You said:
God commanded these wars for the specific purpose of punishment and judgment

But now you are saying that you are not sure that God was behind such massacres at all. You haven't even thought much about it. It's beyond you.

Whether they are right or wrong to say "God is behind them" is not something I look into too
deeply. But that matter is beyond me.

That's a pretty uncertain trumpet you're sounding there Lydia.

So let me put it to you in simple yes or no questions.

Do you believe that Jesus would EVER tell his followers to go in and massacre all the people of an entire nation (men women and children) as a punishment for the sexual sins of some individuals of that nation?

If an angel of light came and told you that God wanted you to push a button and thereby destroy such a population, would you obey?

If not, Why not?

To address another point, you seem to make a distinction between our individual responsibility before God and our responsibility when it comes to earthly nations.

One more yes or no question.

Do you think we escape our personal responsability to obey christ by letting the government make decisions for us?
