I am not the one you are posting to Daniel but I found your post interesting. I remember Joel and never had any bad memories of him in the Family at all but I don't get the associations he has today regarding the past and Berg.

Looking at history from a cultural point of view, at the times when Solomon and David were kings in Old Testament stories, women were looked upon more as property. A woman whether for good causes or bad had to be a good manipulator to have any standing and was always in danger of losing her life or being cast off if she angered the powerful man in her life. Women manipulated for good and bad causes, but it was how they acheived power and standing or got things done. Salome and her mom are examples of manipulation gone bad and queen Esther of manipulation that saved her people.

The worshipping of other Gods was common and kingdoms mixed as far as people(subjects) went and what women believed was not considered to be all that important especially amongst the concubines. In the context of the day, people would see both kings as excessive, probably would see any king or Eastern queen like the queen of Sheba or Cleopatra as excessive. After all they felt a divine right to use people as they saw fit.

In the context of the society DAVID BERG grew up in it was a very different story. Child molestation, incest, prostitution, polygamy etc. are all considered crimes and bad things to do in society. Berg was not taught that these things were good even though he had a sick attachment to his mother.

Taking converts and turning them into prostitutes would be something seen by society at large as a very bad thing to do. Breaking up families and taking whatever woman pleased him regardless of what it did to the family of that woman, those are things frowned upon by society at large.

Berg was not like King David or King Solomon when you put it in a cultural context.

Instead he was a sociopathic person who thought the world should revolve around him. I do think people had meaningful conversions in spite of Berg especially when they were brought into the group via witnessing and not FFing.
