A writer's name is helpful, because it is likely that that person has also written other things, which, if we are aware of, allow us to see the overall direction he/she is trying to take us.
Picture someone coming up to you at a party with a fork-full of food saying, "Taste this. It's good. Trust me. Just close your eyes and take a bite". If it's someone I know well, I might go along, but I wouldn't do it for someone I don't know at all.
