Masada syndrome

In most "recent" cases of mass suicide in cults I think it actually mass murder disguised as suicide. However there have been cases in history where cult members chose mass suicide when it became apparent that their cult could not continue.

As pointed out in posts above, the family is shrinking steadily. The SGAs leave as soon as they can and even the FGAs are leaving.

As conditions worsen, those who have enough gumption to leave do so.

So, in the remaining population, the percentage increases of those who can't leave because they have no place to go, no way of generating support, or because they are too tired, too weak, too sick, too discouraged, etc. to survive outside the cult.

This group is also the least capable of generating income within the group, so as others leave, conditions continue to degenerate.

Without some sort of intervention from the outside, an eventual disaster is inevitable.

At some point, the leaders, (seeing that the cult is no longer a viable cash cow) take the money and run.

At that point, it is in the leader's interest if all the "dreg" members opt out of this world, whether it be by persuasion or by coercion.

Otherwise there will be a lot of accusations and the fiddler might have to be paid.
