I think that it's an illusion. When I study the photo on my computer, what I see is that the shading on the thumb knuckle lines up with the contour shading of the middle finger, which makes it appear to be seen behind the thumb. But if you look at the contour of the thumb, it isn't transparent nor can you see the middle finger in the highlights of the thumb. Hope that my explanation was understandable.
