I think that few people realize that loved ones of cult victims are often victimized themselves.
I was never in The Family, but, my life was changed forever because the person I married was.
When we started our relationship, I was 20 years old, and found myself the instant father of a toddler and a very sick infant. Both of the children were from two absent fathers, both still in the cult.
Tragically, the youngest child died of her illness at the age of three. The older boy is 26 years old now, and I am the only father that he has ever known. His natural father recently contacted us. He has left the cult, but my son wants nothing to do with him at this time.
The drama continues, even 24 years after my wife left, and it does have an effect on my life too, even today.
I'm not signing the blues here, we have had a wonderful marriage, and a great family life. My point is that involvement in an all consuming cult like The Family has a lasting impact not only on the person who joined, but on every person who loves them.
