The name "Pandita Ramabai", and the name of her mission (Mukti) first appeared in "Birthday Warning" as something that supposedly came to Berg "prophetically" in his sleep. All he really said about her was that she "went over the mountains", or something like that, "to give her life for her people". Like you said, the idea was that we should be willing to burn ourselves out like she supposedly did. It was the usual spiritual-sounding, but totally dishonest stuff he pulled out of the hat to make us think that he knew something "by the Spirit", when most likely, he had read about her in a book on the history of missions, or about India.

There were lots of names of people and places that appeared in Berg's letters in this way, especially around that time. I remember meeting with the Maryknoll Fathers in Rome, and the non-plussed stares we got from them when we told them that we had come because our leader had gotten their name in a dream; that we wanted to work with them, etc. I wonder what the conversation was like after we left. ;)
